Tarkwa Bay

For 300 naira u can take a boat from the marina to Tukwa Bay. The boats are sketchy locally made of wood and styrafoam. Anyway, its quite nice and unexpected.

Eko Calls

I'm heading to Lagos for a long weekend/Easter holiday.  I am so stoked.  Fela! the musical is in Lagos from the US.  The Lagos Carnival is this weekend as well.  Lagos is the one place I have barely explored.  This weekend will be my serious Lagos endeavor.  I am so thrilled.  I am literally counting down the minutes...  :)  As usual, I will review my trip here.  So for now, Happy Easter!

Let go...

As we all know, life certainly has its ups and its downs, this is something that is guaranteed. But a life lesson I learned the other day is that every bad day ends and then the next day you wake up with new possibilities. Once you realize this its a little easier to let go. At least it is for me, someone who's very sensitive and emotional. Also, what will be, will be. So whatever it is, I must let it be and let go. Let go and let God. Put it in his hands and just let go and live. Now, I have not mastered this. I'm far from it. But my goal is maybe by the end of summer I will. So just let go...

Trouble in Paradise

This little note helps me get through the workday. It reminds to stand up for myself, rise above, and tell whomever to go hug a transformer!

The latest

During the Nigerian elections if you are not allowed to vote you are not allowed movement during election days. However, I have basically self-imposed lockdown for the entire weekend. Why? 1. Safety 2. It forces me to rest.

So I have been cooking for the first time in a long time and watching lots of films and tv series.

However, this break is good for rest but bad because I really need to be exercising because I'm gaining so much weight back due to my long work hours that are mostly sedentary and stress. Plus overeating has become another issue again for me. I think a huge part of this one is due to loneliness.

The way back
The Kings Speech
Fair game(I love love loved this film about Valerie Plame Wilson)
The Romantics
Morning Glory (only half)
For Colored Girls (only half)

Tv series
No ordinary family
The Closer
Grey's Anatomy
Modern Family

I know I'm missing more and will add later.

Chocolate high

This post is a long time coming. I've been in Nigeria for a while now...and I love it. I consider it my home now. If you ask me why, its not easy to explain. But when you meet up with another Nigerwife often I hear the same thing that I tell people. "Why do you like Nigeria?" Because when I came here I knew I was home. This is so often the answer and its mine too. I hope that my nephew and big sis can come visit me in my home this year to share it with them.

For example, we are currently experiencing the elections. They are supposed to be over three Saturdays, but nothing ever goes as planned, of course. And to top it off. On these days, there's no movement allowed which is enforced by police and military. Out of safety, I am choosing to stay locked in all weekend. I don't believe in taking unnecessary risks. So yesterday's elections were postponed. They ballots didn't arrive. Its utter bullshit. But its life. There's no real democracy her, nor do I believe it really exists in the US either. This weekends elections were for senate and house of reps seats. So now they are on Monday.

So. Since I'm in lockdown, I know some of you might ask, why would I want to live in a place like this? There is no easy answer except, I truly feel that this is my home. Now, I don't feel at home always in my workplace but I often feel like my workplace doesn't really belong in Nigeria.

So. What I love about nigeria? The people, the rhythm of life, the way people move, the goodness of people, the welcoming arms that are often opened, that it takes a village mentality, and the optimistic attitude of the people here. It's just lovely.

When I leave nigeria, I miss home so bad. This is why I say I am in love with Nigeria. I guess Nigeria is my chocolate high.

Where do you consider home and why? Can you explain it to others?

Good food, Good friends

Today is Wednesday. I love love Wednesdays. Why? Wednesdays are ice cream days at the Berger Canteen. So today's meal was exceptional because they had almost all of my favorite foods! I had chicken, fried rice, palm oil stew, plantains, coleslaw, an amazing mushroom soup and caramel, chocolate and banana ice cream for dessert! Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm. So good.

What made it even better is that I got to eat with girls Izzie and Thalie. It was so nice to 'gist' with them and share good food. Gist is what Nigerians call 'chat' in the US. Ladies get together and chat over coffee. Here people say 'gist.'. Let's gist.

The elections are on Saturday. We are not allowed out during this time. It shall be interesting to see how it goes.

I'm not feeling too great these days. Keep coming down with something or the other. I'm at the clinic at this very moment writing this with my phone. I'm having a fever and body ache which sounds a lot like malaria. :(
